Black mold under shower sealant: urgent professional cleaning needed?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our main bathroom in the JVC apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a ton of black mold underneath. It’s been really humid lately, and the bathroom doesn’t have a window, so I guess the ventilation isn’t great. How urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned, or is this something I can handle myself with a trip to ACE?

This is a common and serious issue in Dubai bathrooms, especially in windowless units like yours. The black growth under the silicone is a clear sign of sustained moisture and poor drying.
The urgency depends on the extent. For a small, contained patch (under 1 sq. ft), you can attempt remediation yourself. Scrape out all compromised sealant, clean the area thoroughly with a dedicated mold remover, and ensure the substrate is completely dry before applying a high-quality, mold-resistant silicone. However, if the mold has spread behind tiles or onto drywall, or if household members experience respiratory irritation, professional assessment is strongly recommended. The JVC climate, with its high humidity and constant AC use, creates massive condensation issues that fuel this problem. Proper remediation addresses the visible mold and the underlying moisture source. In many cases, improving mechanical ventilation is the only long-term solution to prevent rapid recurrence. A professional inspection can confirm if the mold is surface-level or has penetrated deeper building materials, which is a health and structural concern. They use moisture meters and can take samples for lab analysis to identify the species, which dictates the appropriate remediation protocol. |
