Black shower grout and smell: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black, and there's a persistent damp smell even though we run the exhaust fan. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Al Barsha, and it's gotten noticeably worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago. Is this something I can tackle myself with a good cleaner from Ace Hardware, or is it time to call in a professional?

Based on your description of black discoloration in the grout and a persistent damp smell in your Al Barsha villa, this is a classic case of active mold growth. The wall facing the exterior is often cooler, leading to significant condensation, which, combined with Dubai's high ambient humidity and year-round AC use creating temperature differentials, provides the perfect environment for mold.
While surface-level cleaning with a commercial product may temporarily lighten the stain, it will not address the root cause. The discoloration indicates that moisture has penetrated behind the tiles and into the substrate. The persistent smell is a key indicator that the mold is active and likely growing in the wall cavity, which a surface cleaner cannot reach. DIY attempts often spread the spores and exacerbate the problem. In the UAE, remediation must adhere to strict guidelines to prevent cross-contamination and ensure complete spore removal. For a situation involving porous materials like grout and a suspected hidden infestation, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our process involves using moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the damage behind the walls, followed by a containment and air filtration protocol to safely remove the biomass and treat the area with EPA-approved biocides.
