Black shower grout and smelly towels: DIY or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black, and there's a weird damp smell in the towels even after washing. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this getting worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What's the best way to tackle this myself, or should I just call the building maintenance?

Black grout in a Dubai bathroom is almost always mold, thriving on the humidity and condensation from your shower. The damp smell in towels confirms a persistent moisture issue, which is common here as AC systems often can't keep up with bathroom humidity spikes.

For a DIY approach, start by improving ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet tiles and glass doors with a squeegee to remove standing water. For cleaning, a paste of baking soda and vinegar can be effective on surface mold. Scrub it into the grout, let it sit, then rinse. For tougher cases, a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) applied carefully only to the grout lines can help, but ensure the room is well-ventilated.

However, if the black discoloration returns quickly after cleaning, the mold may have penetrated deep into the grout or behind the tiles. This is a common problem when the shower sealant has failed. Building maintenance should handle this, as it's often a waterproofing issue they are responsible for rectifying.

If the musty smell persists in the room itself or you or family members experience increased allergy symptoms, the mold could be spreading in hidden areas like behind walls or under flooring. In these cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and, if necessary, air or surface sampling, is advised to determine the full extent. For rental properties, always report the issue to maintenance first as it is typically their obligation to fix.
