Black shower grout mold: DIY fix or call Dubai pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black, and it’s spreading to the ceiling corner. I tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it came back after just a couple of days. I’m worried the humidity from our showers is making it worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger product, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

That black regrowth indicates a deeper mould issue within the porous grout and likely the wall cavity behind it, a common problem in Dubai's high-humidity bathrooms. Bleach only removes surface discolouration but does not address the root structure (hyphae) inside the material.
For a small, surface-level patch, a dedicated fungicidal cleaner (not bleach) applied precisely to the grout lines can be attempted. However, if scrubbing with bleach failed and it returned that quickly, the infestation is established. The spread to the ceiling corner suggests persistent moisture is migrating, potentially from a leak in the shower seal or within the wall. In this case, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. DIY attempts with stronger chemicals often fail to penetrate deeply enough and can pose health risks from fumes in a poorly ventilated space. A reputable inspector will use a moisture meter to identify the source of the dampness—whether it's condensation, a sealing failure, or a pipe leak—which is the critical first step. They can then determine if remediation is needed behind the tiles. Effective removal requires isolating the area, physically removing the contaminated grout, treating the substrate with professional-grade biocides, and then re-grouting with a mould-inhibitive product. Finally, addressing the humidity source with improved ventilation or a dehumidifier is essential to prevent recurrence, as per Dubai Municipality's guidelines on maintaining indoor air quality and building integrity. |
