Black shower grout returning after cleaning: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has been turning black for the last couple of months. I keep scrubbing it with bleach, but it just comes back darker a week later, and the whole room has that damp, earthy smell. I'm worried it's spreading behind the walls. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional to deal with it properly?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of persistent mold growth, not just surface staining. The recurring black discoloration and the characteristic damp, earthy odor are strong indicators that the problem is systemic. The humid, air-conditioned environment common in Dubai bathrooms creates a perfect breeding ground for mold, allowing it to penetrate deep into the porous grout and, as you correctly suspect, potentially into the wall cavity behind the tiles.

Scrubbing with bleach is a common but ineffective DIY approach for this level of infestation. Bleach only removes surface color and is largely ineffective on porous materials; its high water content can actually feed the root system (hyphae) deeper within, causing it to return stronger. Stronger chemical cleaners are not recommended, as they can be hazardous in enclosed spaces and will not address the root cause.

A professional inspection is absolutely warranted. We use specialized tools like borescopes to inspect within wall cavities and moisture meters to identify the exact source of the moisture, which could be a failing shower membrane, cracked pipes, or condensation within the AC system. Remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated materials like the grout and potentially sections of drywall, and using industrial-grade, EPA-approved biocides to eradicate the colony at its source.

For a proper assessment and to prevent structural damage and potential health issues, I strongly recommend you call our certified team at Saniservice. Please call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule a comprehensive inspection.
