Black shower mold: DIY clean or call pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for about five years, and I've just noticed black spots spreading along the grout in the corner of our main bathroom shower. It's been extra humid lately and the ventilation fan isn't as strong as it used to be. Is this something I can tackle myself with a local cleaning product, or should I call a professional company for an inspection, and what would that likely cost in Dubai?

Small black spots in shower grout are common in Dubai's humid climate and often manageable with DIY cleaning. Use a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar, applying it directly to the affected grout. Let it sit for 30 minutes before scrubbing with a stiff brush. Always wear gloves and ensure the area is well-ventilated during cleaning.

Consider a professional inspection if the mold reappears quickly after cleaning, if the area is larger than a square foot, or if you notice a persistent musty smell. This could indicate moisture is trapped within the wall, which a surface clean won't resolve. In such cases, an inspection identifies the moisture source and extent of growth. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide definitive identification of the mold type, which is crucial for assessing risk and determining the correct remediation approach.

Improving ventilation is critical for long-term control. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider upgrading it if its performance has weakened. Wiping down shower walls after use and using a dehumidifier can also help measurably reduce the humidity that allows mold to thrive.
