Black shower mold: DIY fix or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been turning black for a while now, and it's started to spread to the ceiling. I tried scrubbing it with bleach spray, but it just comes back a week later. The room has no window and the extractor fan is pretty weak. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger product, or is it time to call in a professional cleaner?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of persistent mold growth exacerbated by the Dubai climate. The black discoloration in the grout and its migration to the ceiling are significant indicators of a systemic humidity issue, not just a surface-level problem.

The high ambient humidity combined with year-round AC use creates massive condensation, especially in a windowless bathroom with inadequate ventilation. Bleach is a common but ineffective DIY solution; it only bleaches the surface pigment and does not address the hyphae (roots) penetrating the porous grout and ceiling material. The rapid regrowth confirms the colony is well-established.

For a case this advanced, with spread to a secondary surface (the ceiling), a professional inspection is strongly advised. DIY chemical applications often fail to eradicate the problem at its source and can pose health risks from improper chemical use in a confined, unventilated space. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source and extent of the infestation, which is often hidden behind tiles or within the ceiling void.

For a permanent solution, the root cause—excessive moisture—must be controlled. This will likely require upgrading your extractor fan to a model with a higher CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) rating suitable for UAE bathroom sizes. Remediation involves specialized antimicrobial agents and techniques to safely remove the colony and protect the substrate.

Given the persistence and spread, this is beyond a typical DIY fix. I recommend a professional assessment. Please call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection and a targeted remediation plan.
