Black shower mold: DIY fix or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black spots growing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It’s worse in the corners and has a really damp smell. I tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it came back after a couple of weeks. Is this something I can fix myself with a better product, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it properly?

Based on your description of recurring black spots in the grout and a persistent damp smell, you are likely dealing with a deep-seated mold infestation. The UAE's high humidity, especially when combined with year-round air conditioning creating significant temperature differentials, provides the perfect environment for mold growth within wall cavities and behind tiles.

While a surface-level DIY clean with bleach can temporarily remove visible spores, it is not a fungicide and will not address the root cause. The moisture source, often from a failing grout seal or a tiny crack in the waterproofing membrane, allows moisture to penetrate the substrate. Scrubbing can actually exacerbate the problem by releasing a high concentration of spores into the air and driving the hyphae (root structure) deeper into the porous grout and underlying material.

For a persistent issue that returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of moisture intrusion behind the tiles, which is critical for a permanent solution. Remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobial agents to eliminate the colony at its source. The grout and potentially compromised substrate must then be properly sealed to prevent recurrence.
