Black sofa wall splotches from humidity: DIY or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
The wall behind our sofa in the living room has these black splotches that we just noticed after moving the furniture. We’re in a ground-floor villa in Jumeirah and I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse. What’s the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I just call a professional cleaning company straight away?

Black splotches behind furniture on a ground-floor villa wall in Jumeirah are a classic sign of a condensation issue, heavily influenced by Dubai's high humidity levels. Ground-floor units are particularly susceptible to dampness rising from the soil. The wall likely became a cold spot where moisture from the air condensed, especially with the sofa blocking airflow, creating the perfect environment for mould.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted detergent. Scrub gently, dry the area completely, and address the moisture source. Improve ventilation in the room and ensure your AC is running effectively to reduce indoor humidity, which should be below 60%. However, given the location in a ground-floor villa, this is likely more than surface condensation. The moisture may be wicking up from the foundation or through the wall itself, a problem no surface clean will fix. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the true source of the moisture intrusion—this is the only way to ensure it doesn't return. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to diagnose the issue accurately. For any recurring or larger mould issue, a professional assessment is the most effective course of action to protect your property's structure. |
