Black spots in closet: clean myself or call professional« Back to Previous Page
|
We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and it's been especially humid lately. Is this something I can just clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional company to check for a bigger problem?

Black spots in a closet on an exterior wall during humid weather point strongly to condensation, a common issue in Dubai's climate. The temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall creates a cold surface where moisture from the humid air condenses, providing the perfect environment for mold growth.
You can attempt to clean a small area (less than one square meter) yourself. However, do not use bleach, as it is mostly water and can worsen the problem by feeding the mold roots in porous surfaces like drywall. Instead, use a dedicated mold remover or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and then monitor it. Given the location on an exterior wall, this is likely a persistent issue. The mold you see is often just the surface manifestation; the root cause is the moisture. A professional inspection is recommended to assess the wall's condition, identify any potential insulation deficiencies, and confirm the mold species. In the UAE, uncontrolled mold can spread quickly through AC systems. Proper remediation involves fixing the moisture source, removing the contaminated material if necessary, and treating the area with professional-grade biocides to prevent recurrence, not just surface cleaning. For health safety, especially with stored clothing, a verified assessment is the most reliable approach. |
