Black spots in closet corner—DIY or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall facing the outside. It’s gotten way more noticeable since the humidity spiked last month. What’s the best way to handle this myself, or should I call my building management first?

That pattern of black spots in an exterior corner is a classic sign of condensation-related mold growth, extremely common in Dubai's climate. The wall is likely a "cold bridge" where the outside heat meets your AC-cooled interior, causing moisture to condense inside the wall and create the perfect damp environment for mold.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a mixture of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a dedicated mold-cleaning solution, scrubbing gently. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and can drive moisture deeper into the porous wall material. After cleaning, the most critical step is addressing the moisture source. Improve air circulation in the closet by leaving the door open and using a small desiccant dehumidifier. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature to minimize drastic temperature swings against that wall. Given the location on an exterior wall, the issue may stem from inadequate insulation or a minor leak in the building envelope, which is the responsibility of your building management. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, covers a larger area, or you notice a persistent musty smell, it's time to involve them. They should send a technician to inspect for structural causes. For confirmation of the mold type and to verify the cleanup was successful, a professional inspection with post-remediation testing can provide documented peace of mind. |
