Black spots in closet: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started showing these small black spots, and my clothes have a damp, earthy smell. It's gotten noticeably worse since the heavy humidity last week. I’m not sure if this is something I can just wipe down with vinegar myself or if I need to call in a professional to check for a bigger problem?

Black spots in a closet on an outside wall, combined with a damp smell, strongly indicate a moisture issue that needs to be addressed, not just cleaned. In Dubai's climate, this is often caused by condensation forming on the cooler external wall behind the closet, especially during periods of high humidity. The wall acts as a cold surface where moisture from the warm, humid air condenses, creating the perfect environment for mold.

You can attempt a DIY approach for a very small, surface-level issue. A solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can be used on non-porous surfaces. However, simply wiping the visible spots is a temporary fix. The real problem is the hidden moisture source. You must identify and stop the moisture intrusion, or the mold will return. For a closet, this likely means the wall itself is the issue.

Given the description that it's worsening, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The mold growth behind or within the wall cavity could be far more extensive than what is visible. An expert will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the exact condensation point and assess the full extent. In many cases, remediation involves correcting insulation flaws or improving ventilation to prevent the wall from becoming a condensation surface. For health reasons, especially if anyone has allergies or respiratory sensitivities, a professional assessment is the safest course to ensure the problem is resolved at its root.
