Black spots in humid closet: DIY clean or call pros?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the outside wall has these small black spots that I just noticed when I was putting away winter clothes. It’s been extra humid the last few weeks and I’m worried it’s spread behind the shelves. Should I try to clean this myself with vinegar or bleach, or is it time to call one of those mold remediation companies in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a classic presentation of mold growth, a common issue in Dubai due to our high ambient humidity, especially during summer months, and the constant use of air conditioning which can create significant condensation on cooler exterior walls.
The small black spots are likely the visible fruiting bodies of a larger fungal colony. Given the location on an exterior wall and your concern it has spread behind the shelves, it is highly probable there is a larger, hidden biomass. The wall's interior may be acting as a reservoir for moisture due to thermal bridging or a minor permeability issue. DIY methods like vinegar or bleach are strongly discouraged. These are superficial biocides that only address surface discoloration and do not address the moisture source or remove the root structure (hyphae) within the porous building materials. Bleach, in particular, is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold deeper within the drywall or plaster. For a situation like this, a professional inspection is imperative. Our certified inspectors use tools such as thermal imaging cameras to identify moisture pockets and borescopes to view inside wall cavities without destructive testing. Air and surface sampling can then identify the species to guide the appropriate remediation protocol, as some types require more stringent containment procedures. Attempting to clean this yourself risks aerosolizing spores and spreading the contamination throughout your bedroom. Proper remediation requires engineering controls like negative air pressure containment, HEPA filtration, and the application of specialized antimicrobial agents approved for use in the UAE.
