Black spots in Jumeirah villa closet: mold? Who to inspect?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It's been worse since the humidity spiked last month. Is this definitely mold and who can I call for a proper inspection that won't just try to sell me an insanely expensive remediation package right away?

Based on the location and description, those black spots are almost certainly mold. The high humidity in Dubai, combined with a dark, poorly ventilated closet against an exterior wall, creates a perfect environment for it to grow. The recent humidity spike would have provided the final moisture source it needed.

You need a proper inspection to identify the mold type and, more importantly, determine the moisture source. In villas, this is often a small roof leak, condensation from an AC duct running through the space, or capillary rise from the ground. Treating the mold without fixing the source is pointless.

Seek a company that specializes in diagnostics, not just remediation. A credible inspector will use tools like a moisture meter and thermal camera to find the water intrusion and may recommend air or surface sampling to be analyzed by an independent microbiology lab. This data-driven approach provides an objective assessment of the issue's scope.

Be direct when contacting companies. Ask if they offer standalone inspection and testing services without any obligation for remediation. A reputable provider will be transparent and should provide a detailed report with their findings and recommended actions, allowing you to make an informed decision. This separates evidence-based professionals from sales-driven operations.
