Black spots in wardrobe: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Springs for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's been extra humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of airflow made it worse. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call a professional company straight away?

The black spots in your wardrobe are almost certainly mold, a common issue in Dubai villas during humid periods. The Springs area, with its proximity to water features and high humidity, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like wardrobes on exterior walls.
For a small, surface-level area (less than one square meter), a DIY approach can be effective. First, wear an N95 mask and gloves for protection. Clean the area with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (one part bleach to ten parts water), but ensure the room is well-ventilated. Discard any moldy items that cannot be thoroughly cleaned. The critical step is to address the moisture source. This is likely condensation from the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the humid external air seeping in. Improve airflow by periodically airing out the room (when outdoor humidity is lower) and leaving wardrobe doors open. A moisture absorber or a small dehumidifier inside the closet can help significantly. However, if the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or has penetrated porous materials like the drywall or wood at the back of the wardrobe, DIY cleaning will not solve the underlying problem. In these cases, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact moisture intrusion point—often a small gap in the building envelope—and use tools like thermal imaging to find hidden condensation. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing affected materials, and applying professional-grade antimicrobial solutions to prevent recurrence, which is crucial in our climate. For peace of mind, a reputable company will provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the mold count has returned to acceptable levels. |
