Black spots on ceiling: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots growing along the corner where the bedroom wall meets the ceiling. It’s been worse since the weather got so humid last month. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies?

Black spots at the wall-ceiling junction are a common issue in Dubai, often triggered by condensation from AC units meeting high ambient humidity. Before any cleaning, identify the moisture source—this is critical. In many cases, it's a poorly insulated AC duct in the ceiling void causing the cold surface to sweat.

For a very small area (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be attempted. A vinegar solution is more effective than bleach for most common molds, as it can kill the roots that bleach leaves behind. Scrub gently to avoid releasing spores. However, this is only a surface fix and the mold will return in weeks if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved.

Given its location and that it's been growing for two years, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint the exact condensation source hidden above the ceiling, which is nearly impossible to diagnose yourself. Remediation often involves correcting insulation around the ductwork, not just cleaning the visible stain.

Persistent, recurring mold in a bedroom, especially with occupants experiencing allergies or respiratory issues, warrants a lab test to identify the species. This step, offered by companies with in-house microbiology labs, determines the actual health risk and guides the appropriate remediation protocol.
