Black spots on interior wall: urgent or DIY cleanable?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots appearing along the bottom edge of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It’s an interior wall, so I'm worried it might be a leak from the AC unit or something inside. With the humidity rising again, I’m wondering if this is something I need to call a specialist about immediately this week, or if it’s a less urgent problem I can handle myself with some cleaner.

Black spots on an interior wall in Dubai are often a sign of mold growth, typically fueled by the high humidity and condensation from AC systems. Since it's behind a sofa, poor air circulation is a major contributing factor.
This situation usually warrants professional assessment. The critical question is the moisture source. If it's superficial condensation from the wall being cold, it might be manageable. However, if it's a leak from an internal AC drain line or a pipe within the wall, that is a persistent water issue requiring immediate repair before any cleaning is effective. Attempting to clean a recurring leak will only result in the mold returning. For a small, isolated patch, you can carefully clean it with a diluted vinegar or specialized mold cleaner, wearing a mask and gloves. However, if the area is larger than one square meter, the spots are fuzzy or have spread, or there's a musty odor, a specialist should inspect it. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate the hidden source of water, which is the only way to prevent recurrence. In many Dubai villas, this ends up being a blocked or disconnected AC condensate drain line, a very common issue. Proper remediation involves fixing the leak, then professionally cleaning and drying the area to prevent spores from spreading. |
