Black wall mold: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black speckles in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to have gotten a bit bigger. I’m worried it might be the reason for my headaches in the morning. Is this something I can clean with vinegar myself, or do I need to call a professional company to check it out?

Good question. This is a very common issue we see here in Dubai, especially on exterior walls during the humid summer months.

First, that location—an exterior wall corner in a closet—is a classic trouble spot. It's likely a cold bridge, where the outside temperature meets the warm, less-circulated indoor air, causing condensation and creating the perfect damp environment for mold. The fact it's growing behind boxes confirms a lack of air circulation is a major factor.

Regarding your headache: it's a plausible connection. The type of black speckles you describe could be Cladosporium or even Stachybotrys (toxic black mold), both of which produce mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) that can cause respiratory irritation, sinus congestion, and headaches, especially upon waking.

For a small patch (under 1 square foot), a DIY approach with a vinegar solution (undiluted white vinegar, not bleach) can be attempted. You must wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, this only addresses the surface growth you can see. The real concern is hidden mold. The growth on the surface is often just the "fruit" of a larger colony within the drywall or behind the skirting board.

Given its location on an exterior wall and your health symptoms, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We use borescopes to look inside wall cavities and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source and extent of the problem. DIY cleaning often just disturbs the colony, releasing more spores without solving the root cause.

For a proper assessment and to ensure it's remediated according to UAE health and safety standards, it's best to get it tested. Call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection.
