Bleach mold in closet or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get these black speckles in the corners, and I'm sure it's from the humidity. I noticed it after that really heavy dew we had last week and it’s not going away. I’m trying to figure out if I can just scrub it with bleach myself or if I need to call a professional cleaning company to stop it from coming back?

Bleach is not recommended for mold on porous surfaces like drywall or wood, which your closet likely is. It removes surface discoloration but leaves the deeper mold roots intact, causing it to return quickly, often worse than before. In Dubai's high humidity, this is a temporary fix at best.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a dedicated mold remover or a vinegar solution, scrubbing thoroughly. However, the key is identifying and fixing the moisture source. The black speckles on an outside wall after heavy dew point directly to condensation from the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the humid external air. This is a common issue here.

Scrubbing alone won't stop it from coming back. You must improve ventilation in the closet, ensure the AC is set to a consistent temperature to reduce condensation, and use a dehumidifier or moisture absorber in the room.

If the area is larger than a square foot, has a musty odor, or returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is wise. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint the exact condensation points invisible to the eye and can take samples for lab analysis to identify the mold type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. This science-driven approach is the only way to ensure it doesn't recur. For persistent moisture issues, especially in villas, this is often the most effective long-term solution.
