Can AC mold in Dubai cause headaches and sore throat?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing out a faint, damp smell, and for the last couple of weeks, my throat has been constantly scratchy and I'm waking up with headaches. I just pulled the filter out and the back of it is covered in black and green fuzzy spots. Could this mold in the AC be causing these symptoms, and what's the proper way to get it cleaned here in Dubai?

Yes, AC mold in Dubai can absolutely cause those symptoms. The black and green fuzzy growth you're seeing is a clear indicator of microbial contamination, and the damp smell confirms active growth within the system. The constant scratchy throat and morning headaches are classic reactions to inhaling mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) being circulated throughout your apartment.

Dubai's high humidity and year-round AC use create a perfect environment for mold. Condensation inside the AC unit provides constant moisture, and dust pulled from the air serves as a food source. When the system kicks on, it aerosolizes these spores and particles directly into your living space.

For a situation with visible growth and physical symptoms, a standard DIY cleaning is insufficient and can aerosolize more spores. The proper remediation process involves a certified professional who will isolate the unit, use HEPA vacuuming to capture spores, and apply EPA-approved biocides to address the root cause within the evaporator coil and drip pan—not just the visible parts. In Dubai, look for providers who follow NADCA ACR standards and can provide before-and-after surface or air quality testing from an accredited lab to verify the results.

Until it's addressed, running the AC on fan-only mode can help reduce spore dispersal. Replacing that contaminated filter is a good immediate step, but it only addresses a symptom of the larger problem within the unit itself.
