Can bathroom mold cause my kids' allergies after bath?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been having a lot of allergy-like symptoms, sneezing and stuffy noses, especially after their baths. I finally pulled out the cabinet under the bathroom sink in our Jumeirah apartment and found a bunch of black mold growing on the back wall. We’ve had the AC on constantly because of the heat, but I guess the bathroom isn't getting dry enough. Could this be the cause of their symptoms, and what’s the safest way to clean it myself without making the problem worse?

Yes, bathroom mold can absolutely be the cause of your kids' allergy symptoms. The black mold you discovered releases microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air, which are potent irritants. After a bath, steam and humidity aerosolize these particles, making them easy to inhale and leading directly to the sneezing and congestion you're seeing.

Given Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, bathrooms are prime locations for mold. The AC cools the air, but without proper ventilation, the bathroom remains damp, creating an ideal environment for mold to thrive on walls and behind cabinets.

For safe cleaning, start with personal protection: wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. Isolate the area by closing the bathroom door and covering the air vent. For a small patch, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective. Scrub the area thoroughly, but never mix cleaning agents. However, if the mold covers more than one square meter, has a musty odor, or returns after cleaning, the issue is likely deeper within the wall. Disturbing large colonies can send a massive amount of spores into your apartment's air.

In such cases, especially with health symptoms present, a professional inspection is advised to assess the extent and identify the species. Remediation often requires containment of the area and specialized HEPA filtration equipment to prevent cross-contamination, which is not feasible for a DIY approach in an apartment.
