Can bathroom mold cause my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold growing in our bathroom. We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed black spots spreading along the grout behind the toilet and up the wall. It's been worse since the humidity spiked last month. Could this be causing their respiratory issues and what's the safest way to clean it without making the air quality worse for them?

Yes, bathroom mold can definitely cause or worsen coughing in children, especially in Dubai's climate. The black spots you're describing are often Cladosporium or Aspergillus, common in humid bathrooms here. These molds release spores and microscopic fragments into the air, which are irritants to the respiratory system. For children, whose airways are smaller and more sensitive, this can lead to persistent coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy or asthma symptoms. The recent spike in humidity would have provided the perfect conditions for these spores to proliferate and become airborne.

The safest way to clean it depends on the extent. For a small area on non-porous surfaces like tiles, a DIY approach can work. Use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner designed for bathrooms—avoid bleach as it only removes the colour and not the root structure, and its fumes can worsen air quality. Scrub the grout thoroughly and ensure the area is completely dried afterwards using an exhaust fan or a dehumidifier. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores.

However, since the mold is spreading up the wall, this suggests possible moisture penetration behind the tiles, which DIY cleaning cannot address. Scrubbing surface mold in this case can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, temporarily making the air quality much worse for your kids. For widespread growth or if there's any suspicion of hidden moisture, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source and perform remediation under containment to prevent cross-contamination into your living space. In many Jumeirah apartments, this is linked to condensation from AC ducts or leaks from adjacent plumbing. Addressing the root cause is the only way to prevent it from returning.
