Can bathroom mold cause my kids' coughing in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold that's been growing in our master bathroom in Jumeirah. It's mostly in the grout between the tiles and has gotten way worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago. I tried scrubbing it with bleach but it just comes back after a few weeks. Is this something I can handle myself with a better product, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

Yes, bathroom mold can definitely cause or worsen coughing in children, especially in Dubai's humid climate. The constant high humidity, combined with condensation from showers and year-round AC use, creates an ideal environment for mold spores to thrive and become airborne. When inhaled, these spores irritate the respiratory tract, leading to symptoms like coughing, congestion, and worsened allergies.

Bleach only removes surface discoloration but does not address the root cause—the mold's hyphae (roots) embedded deep within porous grout. This is why it consistently returns. For a lasting solution, you need to correct the moisture source. Ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is functioning correctly and run it for at least 30 minutes after showers. Wiping down wet tiles and grout immediately after use also helps significantly.

Given that the mold recurs and is linked to your children's health, a professional assessment is advisable. In many Jumeirah villas, the issue is not just surface mold but often hidden moisture within the wall or from a small plumbing leak. A proper inspection can identify the species and the moisture source. Remediation involves specialized antimicrobial agents to treat the grout and, critically, applying a sealing agent afterward to prevent regrowth. For health-related cases, it's standard to recommend a post-remediation verification test to confirm the environment is safe.
