Can bathroom mold cause my kids' coughing?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold growing in the corners of our master bathroom in Jumeirah. The black spots have gotten worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of weeks ago, especially behind the toilet where it's always a bit damp. I'm trying to figure out if this is something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket or if I absolutely need to call in a professional cleaning service.

Yes, bathroom mold can absolutely be the cause of your children's coughing. The black spots you're seeing, particularly the type that thrives in damp, humid areas like behind the toilet, are often from the genus Stachybotrys or Aspergillus. These molds produce microscopic spores and, more critically, mycotoxins as part of their metabolic process. When these become airborne due to air movement from the AC or simply walking by, they are inhaled. For children, whose respiratory systems are still developing, this can cause irritation leading to chronic coughing, wheezing, and other allergic reactions.
The climate in Dubai is a significant aggravating factor. The extreme humidity, combined with year-round air conditioning, creates a perfect storm. The AC unit itself can act as a vector, drawing in damp air, cooling it (which causes condensation), and then distributing mold spores throughout your home in Jumeirah if the unit is not meticulously maintained. Using a supermarket bleach spray is a common but flawed approach. Bleach is primarily water, which can actually feed the mold root system hidden within the grout or drywall. It may bleach the visible surface discoloration, giving a false sense of resolution, but the underlying colony will remain and quickly regrow. More importantly, the act of scrubbing can aerosolize a high concentration of spores and toxins, potentially worsening the air quality and your children's symptoms. Given the health symptoms are already present, this is a serious case. A professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use specialized equipment like moisture meters and borescopes to identify the full extent of moisture intrusion and microbial growth. Remediation involves containing the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne particulates, and applying EPA-approved, specialized antimicrobial agents to eliminate the colony at its root. For the health of your family, I advise against a DIY solution. Please contact our team for a certified assessment.
