Can black mold from AC leak wait two days?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, but this morning I peeled back the corner and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold about the size of my hand. It's been so humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading behind the walls. Is this something I need to get an emergency cleaning crew for today, or can it wait until my building's maintenance comes for their scheduled visit in two days?

It depends on the extent, but a patch that size from a recent leak is a priority. Given Dubai's high humidity, mold can colonize damp drywall and insulation quickly.
For a contained patch on a hard surface, immediate action can slow it. Wipe the area with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), but only if you can do so without dispersing spores. Contain the area, ensure good ventilation, and avoid using the AC until it’s fixed to prevent spreading spores. However, if the carpet backing or wall is damp, the growth is likely more extensive underneath. A two-day wait for a professional assessment is generally acceptable if the area is sealed off and the AC unit is turned off. The critical step is stopping the moisture source; have maintenance address the AC leak immediately. For confirmed growth in building materials, a professional inspection is warranted to assess penetration into the wall cavity, which is common here due to condensation. Remediation often requires removing and replacing the affected carpet pad and sections of drywall. |
