Can black mold in AC make my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I'm starting to suspect it's the AC. We live in a villa in Mirdif, and I just pulled the filter out to find black spots all over the back of it and a really damp, earthy smell. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to check the entire duct system?

Yes, black mold in AC can make your kids sick. It's a very common trigger for respiratory issues in Dubai's climate. The constant humidity and condensation inside AC units create an ideal environment for mold, which then circulates spores throughout your home. This often causes persistent coughing, congestion, sneezing, and can worsen allergies or asthma.

The black spots and damp, earthy smell you describe, especially in a villa where the system is larger, strongly indicate a mold colony beyond just the filter. Bleaching the visible spot on the filter is a temporary surface fix but does not address the root problem growing deep within the damp cooling coils and ductwork. In many cases, DIY cleaning with bleach can aggravate the situation by releasing a concentrated cloud of spores without properly killing the root colony.

For a villa system in Mirdif with those clear signs and occupants experiencing symptoms, a professional inspection is the recommended course of action. They use specialized tools like borescopes to inspect deep inside the ductwork and often recommend lab testing of a swab sample to identify the specific mold type, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. This is crucial for resolving the issue effectively and ensuring your indoor air is safe for your family.
