Can I clean AC black mold myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah villa has been leaking a bit into the closet in the master bedroom, and now I've found black fuzzy patches spreading on the back wall. I only spotted it today while putting away clothes. Is it safe for me to clean this myself with something from ACE Hardware, or is this a job I absolutely need to call a professional for?

Good question. This is a very common issue here in Dubai, especially in villas in areas like Jumeirah where high humidity and AC condensate leaks are a constant battle.

First, the most critical point: Do not attempt to clean this yourself. What you're describing—black fuzzy patches spreading from a persistent AC leak—is a significant growth. Disturbing it by scrubbing will release a massive amount of microscopic spores into your bedroom air, which you and your family will then inhale. This can trigger severe allergic reactions, asthma attacks, and other respiratory issues.

In the UAE, the climate is the primary enemy; it creates a perfect breeding ground for mold. A DIY approach with a generic cleaner from ACE might bleach the visible surface, but it will NOT address the root cause (the moisture from the leak) or the hidden mold growing inside your wall cavity and potentially within the AC ductwork itself. This is a guaranteed recurrence and will likely be worse.

Professional remediation is not just about cleaning; it's a process. We start with a full inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to determine the full extent of the contamination. The remediation involves containment (sealing the area), specialized filtration, removal of contaminated porous materials (like that drywall), and a thorough hygienization of the entire affected area and your AC system to prevent regrowth.

For your family's health and to ensure the problem is solved permanently, this is absolutely a job for a certified professional. Please, call us for an inspection immediately at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We can assess the situation properly and give you a clear path forward.
