Can I clean AC mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom seems to be blowing out a really damp, earthy smell that's making us cough in the mornings. I finally pulled the filter out and the wall behind it is covered in black and green fuzzy patches. It's been like this since the humidity really spiked a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional company?

Based on your description, this is a serious contamination that requires professional attention. The black and green fuzzy patches indicate active fungal growth, likely due to condensation within the AC unit, a common issue in Dubai's high humidity. The damp, earthy smell and respiratory symptoms are strong indicators that the mold has colonized not just the visible wall, but almost certainly the internal evaporator coils and drip pans, which you cannot access or properly clean yourself.

Using bleach is strongly discouraged. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only bleaches the surface mold without killing the roots. More critically, mixing bleach with the organic compounds in AC systems can create toxic off-gassing. Forcing the AC to run will aerosolize these spores throughout your bedroom, significantly worsening your indoor air quality and health symptoms.

In the UAE, remediation of HVAC systems is regulated to ensure it is performed to standards that prevent cross-contamination and protect occupant health. A DIY approach cannot achieve this.

You need to turn the AC unit off immediately to stop the spread of spores. Our recommendation is to call a certified professional company like Saniservice. Our process involves a full inspection with moisture meters and borescopes, containment of the area, HEPA vacuuming, and application of EPA-approved biocides specifically designed for HVAC systems to ensure the mold is eradicated at its source.
