Can I clean AC mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing these black speckles starting to spread on the wall behind the curtain. With the humidity, I'm worried it's getting worse quickly. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it?

Based on the symptoms you've described—a leaking AC unit, black speckles on the wall, and the high humidity—you are very likely dealing with active mold growth. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, this is a serious concern that requires immediate and correct action.

I strongly advise against using supermarket bleach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only removes the surface discoloration without killing the root structure (hyphae) inside the material. Furthermore, it can add moisture, potentially exacerbating the problem, and its fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space like a bedroom.

The leak must be addressed first. This is the primary moisture source fueling the growth. Until it is repaired by a qualified AC technician, any cleaning will be temporary. For the mold itself, this is not a DIY job. Disturbing it without proper containment can release a high volume of spores into your living space, potentially causing health issues and contaminating other areas.

In the UAE, professional remediation is governed by strict hygiene and safety standards. Our certified team at Saniservice follows a precise protocol: we contain the area, use HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, safely remove the contaminated materials, and apply professional-grade, EPA-approved biocides to eliminate the mold at its root. We then hygienize the area to ensure it is safe for occupancy.
