Can I clean AC mold myself or call a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet behind the headboard. I just moved the bed and found a patch of black and green mold about the size of a dinner plate. It’s been humid for a while, so it’s probably been growing for a few weeks. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company in Dubai?

Based on the description of a dinner plate-sized patch of black and green mold caused by AC leakage, I strongly recommend against a DIY cleaning attempt with bleach. In the UAE's high-humidity climate, surface cleaning with bleach is ineffective and potentially dangerous. Bleach does not kill mold roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like carpet and underlying padding, and its high water content can actually feed the mold, leading to rapid regrowth. Furthermore, disturbing the mold by scrubbing can aerosolize harmful spores, contaminating your bedroom's air and HVAC system.

This situation requires professional assessment and remediation. Dubai Municipality has specific protocols for mold remediation to ensure it is handled safely and effectively. Our certified inspectors would first conduct a thorough assessment, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to determine the full extent of the contamination, which is often far greater than what is visible. The remediation process involves isolating the affected area with negative air pressure, safely removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials like the carpet and padding, and using specialized HEPA filtration and antimicrobial agents to eradicate the mold at its source.

Given the constant AC use and humidity in Dubai, the underlying cause—the leaking AC unit—must also be identified and repaired by an HVAC technician to prevent immediate recurrence.
