Can I clean AC mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah villa has been making the whole downstairs smell damp and I just found patches of black mold around the vent in the master bedroom. It's been like this since the weather got really humid a few weeks ago. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional AC cleaning company to handle it?

Based on your description of a damp smell throughout the downstairs and visible black mold patches around the vent, this indicates a significant moisture issue within your AC system, likely exacerbated by Dubai's recent high humidity. This is a common problem here, where year-round AC use combined with extreme outdoor humidity leads to condensation buildup inside ductwork, creating an ideal environment for mold growth.

While surface mold on a non-porous vent cover might be cleaned with a diluted bleach solution, your situation requires a more comprehensive approach. Cleaning just the visible patch is a temporary fix. The real problem is the mold colony residing inside the ductwork and potentially on the cooling coils and drip pan, which is contaminating the air distributed throughout your villa.

For health reasons and to ensure the problem is eradicated at its source, a professional inspection and remediation are strongly advised. DIY attempts can disturb the mold, releasing a large number of spores into your living space and potentially worsening air quality and health risks. Our certified technicians use specialized equipment, including HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial fogging agents, to safely contain, remove, and sanitize the entire system, not just the visible signs.

For a thorough assessment and a permanent solution to safeguard your family's health, I recommend scheduling a professional mold inspection.
