Can I clean AC mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little bit for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a patch of black mold, about the size of my hand, on the wall behind the unit. The room has started to smell damp and I’m worried it’s making my allergies worse. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on the symptoms you've described—a leaking AC unit, visible black mold growth, a persistent damp smell, and aggravated allergies—this is a situation that warrants professional attention. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create a perfect environment for mold, what you see on the wall is likely just the tip of the iceberg. The moisture from the leak has almost certainly penetrated the wall cavity, allowing hidden colonization to occur.

DIY cleaning with vinegar or bleach is strongly discouraged for several reasons. These methods only address surface discoloration and do not kill the root structure (hyphae) of the mold. More critically, they do not address the hidden moisture problem, guaranteeing the mold will return. Bleach, in particular, can be dangerous when mixed with other compounds and may release harmful fumes in an enclosed space. Disturbing the colony without proper containment protocols can also cause a significant release of spores, drastically worsening your indoor air quality and allergy symptoms.

A professional inspection is crucial. Our certified technicians use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the full extent of the water intrusion and hidden mold growth behind the walls. The remediation process then involves isolating the area with negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing the affected materials, employing HEPA filtration to clean the air, and using EPA-approved antimicrobial agents to treat the area. Finally, we identify and rectify the root cause of the AC leak to prevent recurrence.

For a situation of this scale with health symptoms already present, professional remediation is the only effective and safe solution. Please contact our team for a comprehensive assessment. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
