Can I clean AC mold myself or need a pro urgently?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC in the living room has been leaking a bit for the last couple of weeks and now I’ve just spotted a patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind the unit. It’s been so humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. How quickly do I need to get a professional to handle this, or is it something I can clean myself this weekend?

That black mold is a sign of significant moisture and needs immediate attention. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can spread quickly within wall cavities from an AC leak, making the visible patch just a fraction of the problem.

Cleaning the surface yourself with a diluted vinegar or bleach solution can remove the stain, but it's a temporary fix. The leak must be repaired first, or the mold will return. More critically, you risk disturbing the colony and releasing a high concentration of spores into your living area, which can worsen air quality and health effects.

Given the AC is the suspected moisture source and the mold is on a structural wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the full extent of the contamination, including inside the AC unit and the wall, which is not a DIY task. For a situation like this, look for a provider that uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness and can provide a lab analysis to identify the mold species. This is a health and safety issue for your home, and a proper remediation plan based on evidence is the only way to resolve it completely.
