Can I clean AC mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The air coming from our AC in the master bedroom has started to smell really damp and earthy, especially when the chiller first kicks on in the evening. I checked the unit on the balcony and noticed some black speckling around the edges of the insulated panels. It's been insanely humid in Dubai this month, so I'm guessing it's mold.
Is this something I can clean myself with a specific spray, or is this a job for a professional technician?

Based on what you're describing, that damp, earthy smell and the black speckling on the chiller's insulated panels are classic indicators of mold growth. The intense humidity we've been experiencing here in Dubai creates the perfect breeding ground for this, especially in AC systems where condensation is constant.
While you might be tempted to try a DIY solution with a commercial mold spray, I strongly advise against it for a chiller unit. Improper cleaning can disturb the spores, causing them to become airborne and spread throughout your apartment via the ductwork, potentially contaminating your entire living space. Furthermore, harsh chemicals can damage the sensitive aluminum fins of the heat exchanger, leading to costly repairs. For a proper remediation, the unit needs to be professionally disassembled. Our certified technicians use specialized EPA-approved biocides and high-pressure steam cleaning systems designed specifically for HVAC components. This ensures the mold colony is completely eradicated at its source, not just superficially cleaned. We also conduct pre- and post-remediation air quality testing to verify the spore count has been reduced to safe levels, a critical step often overlooked in DIY attempts. Given the health risks and potential for system damage, a professional inspection and remediation is the only recommended course of action for a moldy chiller.
