Can I clean AC mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks and now I'm seeing a small black patch of what looks like mold in the corner. I tried wiping it with vinegar but the damp smell is still there. Is this something I can tackle myself with a proper cleaner from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call a professional company to stop it from spreading?

Based on the details you've provided, this is a situation that warrants professional attention. A small black patch on the carpet is often just the visible surface manifestation of a larger problem. The persistent damp smell after your cleaning attempt strongly indicates that moisture has penetrated deep into the carpet fibers, underlay, and possibly the subfloor, creating an ideal environment for mold proliferation.

In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use are the norm, AC condensate leaks are a primary cause of indoor mold. The condensation creates persistent dampness, and the cold air from the unit can cause further condensation on walls and surfaces, exacerbating the issue. While surface cleaning with vinegar or a store-bought cleaner might remove the visible stain, it will not address the root cause—the moisture reservoir within the materials—nor will it effectively kill the mold spores at a microscopic level.

Attempting a DIY remediation in this scenario risks cross-contamination, where disturbing the mold can release spores into the AC system and throughout your bedroom, potentially affecting your indoor air quality and health. For a proper resolution, the AC leak must be identified and repaired by a qualified HVAC technician first. Then, the affected building materials require assessment.

We strongly recommend a professional mold inspection. Our certified technicians use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air quality testing to determine the full extent of the moisture and mold growth, which is almost always worse than it appears. This allows for a targeted and effective remediation plan, ensuring the problem is resolved completely and safely, in line with best practices.
