Can I clean AC mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a dusty, damp smell that's making us all a bit congested. I finally pulled the filter out yesterday and found patches of black, fuzzy stuff growing around the edges of the unit itself in the ceiling vent. It’s been insanely humid in Dubai this month, so I guess that's why it’s flared up. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional AC cleaning service for this?

Based on your description of visible black, fuzzy growth inside the AC unit and the associated health symptoms, I strongly advise against attempting to clean this yourself with bleach. In the UAE's high-humidity climate, AC systems are a primary breeding ground for mold due to constant condensation. The growth you see on the vent edges is likely just the visible portion of a larger contamination within the ductwork and evaporator coils.

Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces and can actually aggravate the problem by releasing harmful fumes into your living space without addressing the root cause. Furthermore, improper cleaning can disturb the colony, causing spores to become aerosolized and spread throughout your apartment via the ducts, significantly worsening indoor air quality and potential health risks.

For a situation involving visible growth and health effects, a professional inspection and remediation are not just recommended but essential. Our certified technicians at Saniservice use specialized HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial coatings, and techniques designed to contain and remove the biofilm entirely without cross-contaminating your home. We also identify and rectify the moisture source—often poor drainage or insufficient insulation—to prevent rapid recurrence, a common issue in Dubai's demanding climate.
