Can I clean AC mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for a few days, and now I’m seeing a small black patch of mold, maybe the size of a dinner plate, spreading out from the wall. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the bed. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Based on the description of a recurring AC leak and visible mold growth on the carpet and wall, this situation requires a professional assessment and should not be remediated with DIY methods like vinegar or bleach.

The primary concern is not just the visible patch, which is significant, but the high probability of concealed growth. In Dubai's climate, the constant high humidity and condensation from AC systems create an ideal environment for mold. The carpet and its underlying padding act as a sponge, and the wall cavity behind is likely saturated, harboring extensive mold that you cannot see. Bleach is ineffective on porous materials and only bleaches the surface, while vinegar is not a registered fungicide for structural remediation.

According to UAE best practices, any mold covering more than one square meter (approximately the size of a small bathroom towel) or resulting from a chronic water source necessitates professional intervention. DIY cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home and posing potential health risks.

The correct protocol involves first identifying and repairing the AC leak to stop the moisture source. Then, a certified inspector should conduct air and surface sampling to determine the spore types and concentration levels. Remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration, and the proper removal and disposal of contaminated porous materials like carpet and drywall.

For a situation like yours in Dubai, I strongly recommend contacting a professional mold remediation company. Saniservice provides comprehensive inspection, testing, and UAE-standard compliant remediation. You can reach them for a consultation at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com.
