Can I clean AC mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the wall behind it, and now I’m seeing a small patch of black and green mold spreading there. It’s been slowly getting worse since the weather got really humid a few weeks ago. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it properly?

Based on the symptoms you've described—a persistent AC leak in JVC leading to black and green mold growth—this is a situation that warrants a professional assessment. While small, superficial mold on a non-porous surface can sometimes be addressed with a bleach solution, your case has complicating factors specific to our region.

The core issue is the ongoing moisture from the AC leak. Simply wiping the visible mold without rectifying the water source is a temporary fix; the mold will inevitably return. Furthermore, the mold is growing on a wall, a porous material. Surface cleaning will not remove the hyphae (root structures) penetrating the drywall or paint. Bleach is also largely ineffective on porous surfaces and can exacerbate the problem by adding moisture.

In Dubai's high humidity, AC systems are a primary vector for mold proliferation. The condensation that leads to leaks creates an ideal breeding ground. A professional inspection is critical to identify the exact cause of the leak—be it a blocked drain line, faulty installation, or insufficient insulation—and to assess the full extent of the mold contamination, which is often more widespread than what is visible.

For a proper and lasting resolution, I strongly recommend a certified mold inspection. Our team at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive assessment, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to create a targeted remediation plan that addresses both the visible growth and the underlying moisture problem, ensuring your indoor environment is safe and healthy.
