Can I clean AC mold myself or need professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing a weird, damp smell into the living room and I finally took a look at the unit. There's definitely black and green fuzzy stuff growing around the edges of the vent and on the insulation inside. It's been like this for at least a couple of weeks since the humidity really spiked.
Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach spray, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Based on the symptoms you're describing, you are likely dealing with microbial growth in your AC system, a very common issue here in the UAE due to our intense humidity and the constant cycling of AC units. The black and green fuzzy growth indicates a significant colonization, likely including common molds like Cladosporium and potentially Aspergillus.
While a small amount of surface growth on a easily accessible vent cover might be cleaned by a homeowner, your situation sounds more serious. The presence of growth on the internal insulation of the AC unit is a major red flag. This indicates the contamination is inside the ductwork or the air handling unit itself, which is not a DIY job. Spraying bleach is highly inadvisable; it is ineffective on porous materials like insulation, its fumes can be dangerous when circulated by the AC, and it does not address the root moisture problem. According to UAE health and safety guidelines, proper remediation requires containment, specialized HEPA filtration equipment, and antimicrobial agents approved for HVAC systems to prevent cross-contamination throughout your apartment. Attempting to clean it yourself could aerosolize the spores, spreading the problem and potentially causing health issues. For a case like this, a professional inspection and remediation is strongly recommended. Our certified technicians can perform an indoor air quality assessment to identify the spore types and extent of the problem, followed by a complete hygienization of the entire system.
