Can I clean AC mold myself with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet, and now I’m seeing a bunch of black spots spreading out from the corner near the wall. It’s been getting worse over the last couple of weeks since the humidity spiked. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from Carrefour, or do I need to call in a professional company?

That black spotting is a common issue in Dubai, especially when AC condensate leakage meets our high humidity. While a small surface patch might be manageable, the situation you’ve described—spreading over weeks from a persistent leak—typically requires professional assessment.

Using chlorine bleach from a supermarket is not recommended. It can remove surface discoloration but often fails to kill the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like carpet and drywall. More critically, bleach is mostly water, which can actually feed further mold growth deep within the materials. It also releases harsh fumes that are unhealthy to breathe in an enclosed space.

The primary concern is that the visible spots are likely just the fruiting bodies; the main fungal network may have spread extensively behind the baseboard, under the carpet padding, and into the wall cavity. Proper remediation involves identifying the full extent of the moisture damage, safely removing contaminated porous materials, and using specialized antimicrobials. Crucially, the AC leak itself must be repaired to prevent immediate recurrence.

For a case involving ongoing leakage and spreading growth, a professional inspection is prudent. They can determine the contamination scope, identify the mold species, and ensure it’s handled according to DM and DHA guidelines for indoor air quality. You can clean a small, superficial spot with distilled vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner, but for anything that has spread or originated from a chronic moisture source, expert help is the most effective long-term solution.
