Can I clean AC mold with vinegar or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing some black spots spreading on the wall behind the curtain. The room has started to feel damp and my allergies have been acting up every morning. Is this something I can clean with vinegar from Spinneys or do I need to call a professional cleaning service?

The black spots and allergy symptoms strongly suggest active mold growth, which is common when AC units leak in Dubai's humid climate. Vinegar can kill some surface mold on non-porous materials, but it's ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and gypsum board, which absorb moisture deeply.

For a leak that has persisted for weeks, the moisture has likely penetrated the wall, creating an extensive colony inside the cavity that vinegar cannot reach. The damp feeling confirms a significant moisture issue. In this case, wiping the surface is a temporary fix; the mold will return without addressing the hidden source.

A professional inspection is recommended here for two reasons. First, they will identify and repair the AC leak—the root cause—to prevent recurrence. Second, they can assess the extent of the damage inside the wall using moisture meters and, if necessary, perform remediation that includes containment to prevent spores from spreading to other rooms during cleanup. For health safety, especially with ongoing allergies, a lab test can also identify the mold species to confirm it is not one of the more hazardous types.
