Can I clean AC vent mold myself or hire professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah Village apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just pulled back the rubber seal around the AC vent and found a bunch of black and green mold. It’s been so humid lately that the bathroom mirror is constantly fogged up. How urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself with bleach before it becomes a bigger health issue?

Small patches on a non-porous vent cover can often be cleaned yourself. For a rubber seal with visible growth, the situation is more complex due to Dubai's high humidity, which promotes regrowth.
Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water or use a dedicated EPA-approved mould cleaner. Never mix chemicals, especially not bleach and vinegar, as this creates toxic gas. Scrub the seal thoroughly, but be aware the mould may have penetrated the porous rubber material, making complete removal difficult. The constant condensation from your AC unit and the humid bathroom environment creates a perfect breeding ground for it to return quickly. Given the musty smell you've noticed, the mould is likely active and may have spread into the AC system's interior ductwork or insulation, which is impossible to clean yourself. A professional inspection is strongly recommended in this case. They use borescopes to visually confirm the extent of growth inside the unit and can take surface or air samples for lab analysis to identify the species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. For a systemic issue, DIY cleaning only addresses the visible surface and the odour and potential health irritants will persist. |
