Can I clean AC wall mold myself with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

My AC unit in my bedroom has been leaking a bit of water onto the floor, and now I’m seeing these small black spots spreading on the wall behind the curtain. It’s been getting worse over the past couple of weeks since the humidity spiked. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service to handle it properly?

A small, contained patch of surface mold can sometimes be cleaned with a detergent solution, but using bleach is not recommended for porous surfaces like drywall. The chlorine in bleach does not penetrate to kill the root structure and can leave moisture behind, which often causes regrowth within weeks.

The leak from your AC unit is the primary issue that must be fixed first. In Dubai's high humidity, this continuous moisture source will cause any mold to return rapidly, regardless of the cleaning method. You need an AC technician to stop the leak and dry the area completely before any cleaning is attempted.

For the wall itself, if the staining is only superficial and the drywall is still solid (not soft or crumbling), a thorough cleaning with a dedicated mold remover or a vinegar solution may suffice. However, if the mold has spread over more than one square meter or the wall material feels damp and compromised, the drywall likely needs to be cut out and replaced by a remediation professional to ensure the mold is fully removed.

Given the ongoing leak and the spread you've described, a professional assessment is the most reliable course of action. They can identify the mold type and ensure the moisture problem is resolved to prevent future growth, which is critical in our climate.
