Can I clean apartment mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity these past few weeks. Is this something I can clean with a vinegar solution from Carrefour myself, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies?

That black spot behind the wardrobe is a classic problem in Dubai, especially during humid periods. The high humidity combined with year-round AC use creates perfect conditions for mold on cold exterior walls and in stagnant air pockets.

For a small patch (under 1 square foot), a DIY approach can work. Use a dedicated mold cleaner or a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), not vinegar, as it's often ineffective on porous surfaces. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, scrub the area, and ensure it dries completely with a fan. However, if the mold is widespread, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly, it's a sign of a deeper moisture issue that DIY won't fix.

Given the location (behind furniture on a wall) and the associated health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source—often condensation from AC supply lines or a small leak—and assess the extent of growth inside the wall cavity, which you can't see. In Dubai apartments, unresolved moisture can lead to structural damage, violating tenancy responsibilities.

A reputable remediation company will contain the area, use HEPA filtration, and provide post-clearance testing to verify the spore count is safe, which is crucial for children with respiratory sensitivity. The goal is to solve the root cause, not just clean the visible spot.
