Can I clean bathroom grout mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years in a JBR apartment and just noticed black speckles appearing in the grout between the wall tiles, especially behind the toilet where it's always a bit damp. It’s been humid the last few weeks and the smell is getting stronger. Is this something I can tackle with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service?

Small black speckles in grout are common in Dubai bathrooms due to high humidity and condensation from constant AC use. For a surface-level issue you’ve just noticed, a thorough DIY cleaning is often sufficient.

Use a dedicated antifungal cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar, not just bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the roots penetrating the porous grout. Scrub vigorously with a stiff brush, then dry the area completely with a fan or dehumidifier afterward. The key is eliminating the moisture source; run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower.

If the mold returns quickly, has a strong musty odor, covers a large area (over one square meter), or if you see warping or softness in the walls, it indicates a deeper problem. In such cases, professional inspection is recommended to check for hidden moisture in the wall cavity or behind tiles, which is a common issue in our climate. A certified inspector can perform a moisture survey and, if needed, take samples for lab analysis to identify the exact mold species and its potential health risks.
