Can I clean bathroom mold myself or hire a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold that's been growing in our bathroom. It's in the grout between the tiles in the shower and has these little black spots. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it getting really bad this past winter. Is this something I can clean myself with a product from Carrefour, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

Small, surface-level mold on bathroom grout can often be managed with a DIY approach. For a household cleaner, a solution of one part chlorine bleach to four parts water applied with a stiff brush is effective. Many residents also use dedicated mold-removing sprays available at supermarkets; ensure the area is well-ventilated during use.

However, if the mold has returned strongly after previous cleaning or if there's persistent coughing, a DIY clean may not address the root cause. The black spots suggest common mold, but persistent moisture from Dubai's high humidity and condensation from cool AC air meeting warm, moist shower air creates a perfect environment for regrowth. Scrubbing only removes the visible colony, not the underlying moisture issue.

For recurring mold or health symptoms, a professional assessment is recommended to identify the source of the moisture, which could be inadequate ventilation, hidden leaks, or insulation problems within the wall. A proper inspection, sometimes involving moisture meters, can determine if the problem is more than surface-level. If the mold has penetrated the grout or backing board, removal and replacement of the material may be necessary to fully resolve it. In such cases, a professional remediation service can handle the containment and removal to prevent spores from spreading to other home areas during the process.
