Can I clean bathroom mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the grout between the tiles behind our toilet. It’s been so humid lately that the bathroom window is constantly fogged up. Is this something I can clean myself with a product from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on the conditions you've described in your Jumeirah apartment, this is a very common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and the constant use of air conditioning, which can create significant condensation, especially in bathrooms with inadequate ventilation.
The black spots in the grout are likely Cladosporium or surface-level Aspergillus, common in such environments. For a small, localized area confined to the surface of non-porous tile grout, a DIY approach can be attempted. I recommend using a dedicated, non-bleach-based antimicrobial cleaner from a supermarket. Bleach only removes the surface pigment and can actually feed the mold roots (hyphae) deeper within porous materials. Scrub thoroughly with a stiff brush and ensure the area is completely dried afterward. However, the presence of persistent condensation on the window is a significant red flag. This indicates a chronic moisture problem and poor ventilation, which are the root causes of mold growth. If the mold reappears after a thorough cleaning, if the affected area is larger than one square meter, or if you notice a persistent musty odor, this suggests a more deeply rooted infestation that requires professional assessment. In such cases, DIY methods are insufficient and can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination. As per Dubai Municipality guidelines, remediation of persistent or large-scale mold growth should be handled by certified professionals using controlled containment, HEPA filtration, and industrial-grade antimicrobials to ensure complete removal and prevent recurrence. For a proper inspection and to address the underlying humidity issue, I strongly recommend contacting our specialists at Saniservice.
