Can I clean bathroom mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Deira apartment's bathroom has been turning black for a while now, and after last week's humidity, I just noticed a bunch of fuzzy grey spots starting to spread on the ceiling. We run the exhaust fan, but it doesn't seem to be enough. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to deal with it properly?

Based on the description of black grout and now fuzzy grey spots on the ceiling, you are dealing with active mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai bathrooms due to the high ambient humidity and constant air conditioning creating significant condensation.

While superficial mildew on non-porous surfaces can sometimes be addressed with a dedicated cleaner, your situation likely requires more than a supermarket bleach spray. Bleach is ineffective on porous materials like grout and drywall; it only bleaches the surface color while the fungal roots (hyphae) remain intact inside the material, guaranteeing rapid regrowth. The fuzzy growth on the ceiling is a particular concern, indicating a established colony that is releasing spores into your indoor air.

For the black grout, a high-alkaline, EPA-approved antimicrobial cleaner applied with scrubbing can be a temporary solution, but the underlying moisture issue must be resolved. The exhaust fan may be underpowered or improperly vented, failing to achieve the necessary air changes per hour to remove humid air. This is a persistent problem in many UAE apartments.

Given the spread to the ceiling, we strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact source of moisture and the full extent of the contamination, which is often hidden within wall cavities. DIY attempts can inadvertently aggravate the problem by dispersing a high concentration of spores.
