Can I clean bedroom ceiling mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the edge of the bedroom ceiling where the wall meets. It's the room closest to the main AC unit and feels more humid than the rest of the apartment. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it?

The black spots at your ceiling's edge are a classic sign of condensation mold, extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use. The cold air from the AC unit meets the warm, humid air in the room, causing water to condense along that cold surface, creating the perfect environment for mold growth.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Use a mixture of detergent and water, scrubbing gently. Vinegar can be effective for some molds. Avoid bleach, as it primarily removes the colour but not the root structure, and its high water content can actually feed the mold, causing it to return. Crucially, you must identify and address the moisture source. Wipe down condensation from AC vents regularly and consider using a dehumidifier in that room.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odour, has penetrated the ceiling material (drywall/plaster), or returns after cleaning, a professional assessment is necessary. They can identify the specific mold species and its underlying cause, which is often a more complex issue like an AC drain line leak, insufficient insulation, or a pressure imbalance in your HVAC system. In many cases, improper DIY cleaning can aerosolize spores and spread the problem. A reputable company will provide documented before-and-after testing from an accredited lab to verify the issue is resolved.
