Can I clean bedroom mold myself or call a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It wasn't there during the last summer, but with all the humidity lately, it's gotten bigger and has a really damp smell. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or should I call a professional company for an assessment, and what's the typical cost for a small job like this in Dubai?

Small patches of surface mold on non-porous materials can often be cleaned yourself. For a closet corner, use a solution of detergent and water, not bleach. Bleach only removes the colour and doesn't address the root moisture problem; it can also damage porous surfaces like drywall and release harmful fumes.

However, the damp smell indicates a deeper issue. In Dubai's climate, this is likely due to condensation from your AC unit or a small, hidden leak. Simply wiping the visible patch won't solve the underlying cause, and the mold will almost certainly return. The high humidity here provides a constant source of moisture for regrowth.

For a recurring or odorous problem in a villa, a professional assessment is recommended. They will identify and rectify the moisture source—often a clogged AC drain line or insufficient insulation causing condensation—which is the only permanent solution. The cost for a small, contained job is generally reasonable, but you should request an on-site inspection for an accurate assessment, as pricing depends entirely on the root cause and extent of the remediation required.
